A trial day is a great way to see if a nanny is the right fit for your family. Here is a helpful checklist to guide you through the process and make the most of the day.

So you’ve found a nanny you’re considering for your family. You’ve read her CV, chatted with her in an interview, and now you’re ready for the next step: the trial day. This is your chance to see how she interacts with your child, handles routines, and fits into your home.
To help you prepare, we’ve put together a checklist to make sure nothing gets missed.
1. Start with a warm welcome
Give your nanny a friendly introduction. Let her know who will be home, where things are kept, and what the day will look like. A comfortable start sets the tone for the rest of the day.
2. Share your child’s routine
Every family has its own rhythm. Share your child’s nap times, meal preferences, play habits, and any comforting routines. Even if she has experience, she will appreciate the guidance.
3. Talk about house rules
Be clear about any boundaries. Are shoes off in the house? Can your child have screen time? Should the nanny use her phone during the day? Mention anything that matters to you upfront.
4. Observe interaction
Watch how she talks to your child, sets boundaries, and encourages play. Does she engage? Is your child comfortable with her? You do not need to hover, but a little observation goes a long way.
5. Test real-life scenarios
Let her handle a nappy change, prepare a bottle, or take your child for a short walk. These everyday tasks show how confident and capable she is with your child’s needs.
6. Ask for feedback
After the trial, ask your nanny how she felt about the day. Did she notice anything about your child? Did she have any questions or concerns? Her answers can tell you a lot about how invested she is.
7. Trust your gut
At the end of the trial, ask yourself: Did I feel comfortable? Did my child seem happy and settled? Sometimes your instinct will give you the answer you need.
8. Be honest and kind
Whether you choose to move forward or not, always give kind and clear feedback. If she is not the right fit, thank her for her time. If she is, let her know what the next steps will be.
A trial day is not just for the nanny. It is for you too, so you can feel confident, supported, and reassured that your child is in good hands.
